“You wanna do what?” Caleb looked at Cassie like she’d gone insane.

Cassie looked about where they sat on the lawn of the Samuels’ ranch. She’d ridden out after she’d been done for the day, hoping to catch him there. Luck had been with her.

“Shh. Keep your voice down,” she said. “You heard me.”

“Ok, Virginia, I knew you were crazy, but not this crazy.”

“Stop calling me that. Why is it so crazy?”

Caleb looked at her. “You wouldn’t even think about marrying me as a prize for a bet, but all of sudden, you want to get married to make a home for Dom?”

“Well, getting married to take care of a child is a much better reason than a bet, Montana,” she said.

Caleb smiled. “Is that gonna be your pet name for me?”

“No. Don’t get off the subject. What is so wrong about doing that?” Cassie said.

“Are you sure this isn’t just because of what I said to you a few nights ago?” He leaned over closer and whispered, “Are you lusting after me?”

She gasped and shoved him roughly, and he fell over. Caleb just laughed and stayed put. “I’m so tired, I think I’ll sleep right here tonight.”

“Get back up here,” Cassie insisted and pulled on his arm, to no avail. She narrowed her eyes and did something she thought she’d never do; she pinched his rear end.

Caleb yelped and sat up so fast, they almost knocked heads. “Don’t do that again,” he said.

“Then stop playing around, Caleb. This is serious,” Cassie said, as she looked into his eyes in the growing twilight.

“No, this is insane. I’m not gonna marry you for that reason, or for any other right now. I don’t have a home, in case you haven’t noticed,” he said.

“But it will be done soon and it won’t take us long to make arrangements to be married,” Cassie said. “Besides, you were the one who admitted to lusting after me, remember?”

He groaned. “How can I forget? You’re never gonna let me live that down, are you?”

She gave him a flirtatious look and said, “No, especially when it’s not one-sided.”

Caleb got a lopsided grin on his face as he said, “Really? You’re not just tryin’ to get your own way?”

“Maybe a little bit, but I do mean it,” Cassie said.

Caleb gave her a doubtful look.

“I do,” she insisted.

“Even so, what if we get married and his uncle wants to take him? Then what? I’m warnin’ you, Cassie, once I get married, that’s it. There won’t be any divorce and the marriage will be consummated for sure, so an annulment will be out of the question. I’m not that kind of man.”

“I’ve thought about that, too. We’ll wait to go through with everything until we know what Dom’s uncle is going to do. If he wants him, then we can revisit the issue and decide what we want to do,” Cassie said.

Caleb frowned at her for several moments and then got up and walked away from her. She rose and followed him, dusting off her skirt as she went.
